13 Common House Siding Options Plus How to Pick the Right One

Fiber cement siding is typically more expensive than vinyl siding but less expensive than wood siding. It's installed over studs or exterior wall sheathing on a moisture barrier. Factory painting is highly recommended and generally under warranty for 25 years. The color you loved when the wood shingles are installed will change, often all too quickly.

Our cedar siding cost guide will help you estimate the costs of materials and installation. In addition to its curb appeal, natural stone is extremely durable, resilient to weather conditions, and low maintenance, DiMartino says. Vinyl and wood tend to be the least expensive materials, while brick and stone cost the most, though veneers of either of those will save you some cash. Cedar shingles that are treated and maintained can last for decades making it an excellent option. It is often an eco-friendly option as it lowers overall energy costs on most homes.

Vinyl Siding

Reapply penetrative stains or paints every three to five years. Ensure that you have proper ventilation behind the siding, repair any weather sealing issues, and keep the siding free of mildew and buildup. A mild oxygen bleach solution should help to remove mildew from existing wood.

However, when bare, it’ll turn gray and become less dimensionally stable. Not all wood siding is created equal, and cedar has some unique qualities that make it highly desirable for your home. For starters, cedar has natural oils that resist rot, insects, and decay better than many woods.

However, this usually means that the wood is left unprotected from the elements, which can eventually cause various pieces to warp or twist. The side of your house that is exposed to direct sun or prevailing weather patterns may need to be cleaned and stained more often. Otherwise, every 3 to 5 years is adequate for staining and painting. Most homeowners treat their cedar shingles and shakes with a flame retardant for safety reasons. Unfortunately, once they are thus treated they are no longer safe for the landfill.

The cedar will become worn and rotted if not maintained regularly. As far as maintenance, inspect your siding annually for cracks or damage that needs to be repaired. The average cost of re-siding is around $11,500, according to ANGI, the home services marketplace, so taking on this project for your home is a major investment. That means you definitely want to get it right the first time. Though most homeowners hire the work out, it pays to have a firm handle on the options before you start interviewing contractors.

Some people chose to use lightly stained clear cedar on an accent or on the wall by the entry of their home for maximum impact, and painted cedar siding on other areas. The name Lindal Cedar Homes is historically synonymous with the image of post-and-beam cedar siding houses, built with high-pitched roofs and expanses of glass to take in panoramic views. This kind of classic home is still a large part of the Lindal Cedar Homes portfolio. It’s a style of home that has stood the test of time – both physically and design-wise. Of course, these days Lindal homes are built with any number of different siding materials – from composite material such as Allura siding to stone, metal and even stucco. They can prove a durable and cost-effective alternative to cedar siding.

Real Cedar siding instantly elevates your home to another level of warmth and beauty for the ultimate curb appeal. Try as they might, the look, the feel and the scent of natural wood just can’t be duplicated in a chemistry lab. That’s why synthetic, fibre cement siding always ends up looking a little on the cheap side – odd, considering composite materials actually cost more than Real Cedar. Water can penetrate brick veneers, so a water membrane must be installed between the wood and brick layers to protect the home. Due to the cost of installation and materials, brick is at the higher end of the siding cost scale.

Pros of Shakes and Shingles

If the color becomes faded, you can paint it, but you’ll need to use primer. Individual sections of vinyl siding can be replaced easily, giving it an advantage over cedar planks. Any time dirt, debris, and moisture are allowed to pile up on the siding and in the creases, mold and mildew will grow. Maintenance in keeping the siding clean and sealed is important to prevent this.

If you want siding that’s going to last a long time and also give your home a unique aesthetic, it’s important to consider all the factors before buying. James Hardie makes the world’shighest-performance fiber cement siding, trim, backer board and more—in styles that suit every home style, from historic to modern. Tongue and Groove planks join together and interlock for a snug fit. The tongue – a projecting centered ridge – on the side of one plank slides into a corresponding groove on the next plank, eliminating the need for gluing or using nails to connect the two. The image shows tongue and groove clear cedar siding with different pre-stain options (image courtesy of Westrend Exteriors). You can have a traditional Lindal Cedar Home with cedar siding, even if you live in a high-fire area!

Cedar shingle siding is beautiful, durable and probably not as difficult to install as you think. A classic style, clapboard is weather resistant and can stand up to extreme temperatures. Vinyl can crack or warp under extreme weather conditions, Prchal says. While it's long-lasting, it may not offer the timeless appeal or durability of some other materials. Stone is a more expensive exterior option that requires professional installation and maintenance. Choosing energy-efficient siding will help cut down on your utility bills—and by quite a bit if you live somewhere with extreme temperatures.

Cedar siding at least two inches thick and coated with a flame retardant gives your home the same fire-resistant properties as composite materials. Lindal homes have been built with cedar siding in high-fire risk areas of California and elsewhere. It is possible to split a mature and healthy cedar tree into long, straight planks of three or more inches in thickness, with almost no knots.

Creepy porcelain dolls named Frozen Charlotte were sold in tiny caskets and baked into cakes

“The Victorian doll who represented a frozen woman” has become an example of “hidden” or “hushed-up” history, the type of bizarre “did you know … ? ” factoid we believe and share without asking for primary sources. Doll collector/historian Nancy Shepard cautioned about this intertwining of fact and fiction in 1952.

Frozen Charlotte Dolls Were Inspired By A Young Woman Who Froze While Riding To A Ball

Larger examples were often used in the manner of a traditional doll, as a plaything. Some were even designed to be brought into the bath with a child as they could float on their backs and would not be damaged by water. Smaller sizes were commonly inserted into cakes or puddings as charms, in much the same fashion as a Mardi Gras king cake which traditionally has a baby figurine hidden inside; to find it afforded the discoverer promises of future prosperity. Although we have evidence that 19th-century Americans (and others) sometimes placed penny dolls (and other items) into cakes, there’s no evidence that they ever considered these objects as symbols of frozen women. Many people find porcelain dolls, in particular, to be eerie or creepy. Despite their treasured status amongst doll collectors, the stiff but uncannily human features of these dolls are often likened to corpses.

Plus, many of the dolls for sale today on sites like eBay and Etsy are not pre-owned dolls, but rather those excavated in Germany. That the name “Frozen Charlotte” was coined within the doll-collecting community sometime slightly before or around World War 2 is evident in doll collector/historian Eleanor St. George’s 1948 book, Dolls of Yesterday [see also Note 4]. He stripped the mantle off her brow, And the pale stars on her shone, And quickly into the lighted hall, Her helpless form was born.

Adorn your Christmas tree with these miniature treasures or use them in your festive table settings to add a touch of nostalgic charm.

When they arrived, her more-bundled-up beau found her frozen to death in the sleigh. The story says Charlie died of a broken heart soon afterward, and they were buried together in a single tomb. These tiny, pale, porcelain nightmares were pottery dolls manufactured in Germany in 1850, and intended for children to play with during bath time.

The male version of the porcelain doll earned the name Frozen Charlie, likely after Charlotte's beau who perished of a broken heart and shared her tomb. In 1840, The New York Observer published an article about a horrific New Year's Eve accident. According to the article, "A young woman, whose name is given as Miss _____, was frozen to death while riding twenty miles to a ball on the eve of January 1, 1840." The Germans manufactured the porcelain dolls to float in the bath, a 19th-century rubber ducky. The dolls would float on their backs in bathwater, entertaining children during their baths. There isn’t a single reference (in magazines, books, newspapers, or anything else for that matter) of these porcelain dolls being called “Frozen Charlottes” in the entire 19th and early 20th centuries.

It was likely coined by doll collectors as late as the mid-1940s, when mentions of “Frozen Charlotte dolls” in ads, newspapers, books, and magazines skyrocketed, and soon became the common way to refer to these Victorian playthings. Despite what we moderns believe, nor did the legend of frozen Charlotte serve as inspiration for the creation of Frozen Charlotte Russe, a favorite 19th-century dessert. The trifle-like treat, popular into the 20th century, is merely a cold (or icebox) version of Charlotte Russe, which is based on the still older and simpler charlotte, a type of molded cake known since the 18th century. The increasing prevalence of iceboxes in homes and restaurants in the United States in the last half of the 19th century drove the creation of many cold desserts, which could now be served all year long.

Their popularity soared in Britain and America, where they were baked into cake as a nice (or not so nice, depending on your tolerance for creepy little porcelain girls) surprise for kids. The song was itself based on a poem by American writer Seba Smith, who first published the poem in a Maine newspaper in 1843. His poem was in turn inspired by an account published in a New York newspaper in 1840 detailing just such an incident. The doll's coloration is sometimes believed to be a reflection of the young lady's frosty demise. All mentions of these dolls from the time period call them “penny dolls,” not “Frozen Charlottes.” So when did the name we use today actually become connected to these little porcelain dolls?

Today, Martha Stewart provides a recipe for Frozen Charlottes, though without the backstory of the cautionary tale of a 19th-century girl freezing on a sleigh ride. The connection between the name and the dolls lies in the fact that, like the unfortunate Charlotte in the song, these dolls are often depicted as being barefoot and without clothing. The popularity of the ballad likely contributed to the adoption of the name for these small porcelain dolls, which began to emerge around the same time.

They are formed as one solid piece and have no joints, thus giving rise to the name “Frozen”. Some have dark-painted hair and red lips but they are otherwise as white as snow. So, while it makes a compelling and delightfully morbid origin story, none of the children who actually played with these dolls knew of a connection between their favorite toy and a foolish young woman’s frostbitten corpse. And even though they’ve lost a bit of their historical creepiness, don’t let that stop you from being excited if you find a porcelain doll on the shore. The poem was a hit, as it touched on the dangers of vanity and not listening to your parents.

First of all, let’s talk about the soup menu. Often, this is a warning flag to me, indicating that the place is just reheating big vats of pre-packaged soup, but the pleasant aromas indicated that these were quality soups, myself settling on the lazy golumpki soup, and Carol going for the classic clam chowder. The lazy golumpki soup (I think the “lazy” means that instead of doing the traditional making of it from leftovers, you’re just adding the ingredients for a golumpki to the soup) wasn’t shabby at all, despite the name. It was a rich, flavorful blend of meat, cabbage, tomato, and spices, reminding me well of the many pleasant cabbage rolls I’ve had in my life (seeing that Carol and I are both of Polish and Lithuanian heritage). I’d definitely enjoy another cup of this, especially since unlike most restaurant soups it wasn’t over-salted.

We started as a cozy, family-run restaurant in Hatfield, Massachusetts. Now, we've evolved into something even better! Introducing Chowder House Rules, our online extension of the beloved Smithsonian Chowder House.

There’s also a location in Hatfield that we’ve driven by a few times, but we’re never seeming to do it at lunch time. But a recent trip down to Chicopee (to the most unusual Hu Ke Lau that’s still doing Polynesian dinner shows, and worthy of it’s own review at some point) ended up with us being in Northampton right around lunch, and we finally go to duck in. Overall, despite the popover (which I might get one more time in case my salty one was a one-off error), I rather enjoyed Smithsonian. The sandwiches were well executed, the soups very enjoyable with an extremely good selection, and the staff pleasant. I’ll definitely drop in another time for lunch if in the area. All too often New England clam chowder ends up being a creamy, glue-ish mess (one reason I prefer Rhode Island chowder, since sins can’t be hidden under a cream sauce), but that wasn’t the case here, with a smooth, creamy, and very flavorful and clam-rich chowder, one of the better ones we’ve had recently.

At the urging of Bonnie Cone, Burson accepted a position at Charlotte College in 1963. He was a professor of chemistry and chair of the department when Charlotte College became the fourth campus of the University of North Carolina in 1965.

After graduating from Central High School, Rowe attended UNC-Chapel Hill, where he completed a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Bouligny Inc., Powell Manufacturing Co. and Powell Agri-Systems Ltd. Sally Dalton Robinson attended public schools in Charlotte, St. Mary’s School in Raleigh and Duke University. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and earned a bachelor’s degree in history.

It is appropriate such a building honors Dean Wallace Colvard, UNC Charlotte’s first permanent chancellor, a man considered ahead of his time in many respects. Following that merger, Cameron moved to Charlotte, where he became chief executive officer of First Union in 1968. His affiliation with UNC Charlotte dates to 1967, when Cameron became a member of the board of directors of the UNC Charlotte Foundation.

You'll need to apply to UNC Charlotte's Honors College by Dec. 1st and submit the FAFSA by Jan. 1 to be considered for the scholarship. If you're attending a UNC school, you might qualify for the NC Scholarship. You'll need a family income of $75,000 or less and an expected family contribution of $7,500 or less. Oldest Bar in New York

mcsorley's ale house

The pub, whose motto was “Good Ale, Raw Onions, and No Ladies,” was not yet ready to get with the times. In fact, they fought hard to keep women out of the establishment and even considered becoming a private club to do so. When he died in 1883, his chair was retired and still sits behind the bar.

Irish Culture

You have to be a regular of the pub for over 40 years in order to be placed across from Old John’s likeness. However, about two dozen wishbones remain on that lamp rail over the bar—one for each of the neighborhood men who never made it back from France. They were left up by Bill as a poignant tribute to those patrons who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Experience McSorley's

Some have occupied their lots longer than McSorley’s, like the Ear Inn at 326 Spring Street or Fraunces’ Tavern at 54 Pearl—one of the oldest remaining structures in Manhattan, dating as far back as 1785. Yet few establishments will maintain their original spirit like McSorley’s saloon, a spirit, still carried forward and owned by the Maher family. Though its wooden walls and doors may be etched and notched by wear, its beauty and nostalgia endure in the smooth ale poured and the patrons who were there—lending truth to its motto, we have been here before you were born. It rode the fervor of Abraham Lincoln’s historic Cooper Union Address delivered in New York City. They served the 16th president their signature brew, only to later lament the fateful news of his assassination in April of 1865.

A Tour of McSorley’s

But on a Tuesday afternoon, it’s easy enough to grab a couple of beers, settle into a worn wooden table, and imagine the people who have passed through its double doors in need of “a cold beer to warm up”—a phrase Buggy uses frequently. According to legend, bartenders would step on a special pedal to fill the mugs with the real deal to longtime customers. McSorley’s managed to avoid legal trouble because many of Tammany Hall politicians drank there throughout Prohibition. Throughout these years, American painter John Sloan also famously created a series of still life paintings of McSorley’s, such as the one above.

Above the fireplace is the McSorley’s motto “Be Good or Be Gone”, as well as a portrait of Peter Cooper, founder of Cooper Union. There have been few structural changes to the Old Ale House, the kitchen being a glaring exception. With the Supreme Court ruling of 1970 (allowing women entry into McSorley’s), the bathroom became coed. Sixteen years later, a ladies room was installed, displacing the galley.

There seems to be a place — a theme for every square inch of the wonderful Old Ale House, and the northwest corner of the backroom is a monument to music. Giles donated a gold record from his million selling album “Love Stinks”, the so and so album hangs there along with period sheet music. Ireland Before You Die (IB4UD) is the biggest Irish travel and culture website. We highlight the most inspiring experiences Ireland has to offer. A wanted poster for John Wilkes Booth hangs on the wall after he assassinated McSorley’s patron and 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many pubs in New York were men-only and didn’t allow women to drink in or even enter their premises.

City Shuts Down Historic McSorley's Old Ale House Over Health Violations

After all, in 1860, Lincoln reportedly went straight to McSorley’s to quench his thirst after giving a speech that later became known as the Cooper Union Address. That speech, in which Lincoln condemned the expansion of slavery, galvanized the city into a feverish excitement. Historians credit the Cooper Union Address as the turning point in Lincoln’s campaign.

Chances are Cooper sipped away his defeat to Samuel J. Tilden for the democratic nomination for president. Tilden might have pondered the same, when he lost that year’s election in 1876 to Rutherford B. Hayes. McSorley’s is famed to be one of the last men’s only clubhouses. Yet from its ardent grip of the status quo, the tavern still stood on the cusp of social change—if only reluctantly so—by losing a case heard before the Supreme Court in 1970. McSorley’s was then forced to serve female patrons, and there is no doubt this forever changed the social bar scene in New York City. At a time when many establishments in the south may have still served whites only, the historic tavern served African-American poet, drama, and music critic Everett LeRoi Jones who died January of last year.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.

That is, until the city’s health department came knocking in 2011 and demanded the bones be dusted. (His daughter, Teresa Maher de la Haba is the current owner.) He felt that he could not entrust the task to anybody else. One by one, he took down each wishbone, dusted it, and carefully returned it to its rightful place on the lamp rail. Since its establishment in 1854, McSorley’s sawdusted floors and tchotchke-covered walls have beckoned countless New Yorkers and visitors alike.

Bill McSorley was the kind of person who minds his own business vigorously. He inherited every bit of his father’s surliness and not much of his affability. The father was by no means a lush, but the son carried temperance to an extreme; he drank nothing but tap water and tea, and bragged about it.

To commemorate the unique difference of no cash register, there is a sign hanging in which states “We Trust Here” and shows the backside view of a pig. Above the bar, wishbones covered with many generations worth of dust are visible from their seat upon an old gas lamp. As you begin to take a closer look, you can spot an original wanted poster for Abraham Lincoln’s assassin following that tragedy, dating back to 1865. As well, you may have the good fortune to spot Babe Ruth’s farewell photo from Yankee stadium, which was a donation from the photographer who was a regular himself. America’s oldest, continuously operated bar is packed full of vast history throughout the various areas of the bar.

The memories of ex-presidents, popular society figures, entertainers and athletes mingle with the working class, as the poets and artists mix in to enjoy the same old ale as those before them. Every visit to McSorley’s reveals new history which may have been missed on a prior visit. Unlike the drinks, which are slammed on the bar seconds after ordering, change arrives slowly at McSorley’s.

He patterned his saloon after a public house he had known in Ireland and originally called it the Old House at Home; around 1908 the signboard blew down, and when he ordered a new one he changed the name to McSorley’s Old Ale House. That is still the official name; customers never have called it anything but McSorley’s. Old John believed it impossible for men to drink with tranquillity in the presence of women; there is a fine back room in the saloon, but for many years a sign was nailed on the street door, saying, “Notice. When other women came in, Old John would hurry forward, make a bow, and say, “Madam, I’m sorry, but we don’t serve ladies.” This technique is still used. As a businessman, Bill was anachronous; he hated banks, cash registers, bookkeeping, and salesmen. He would count out the money four or five times and hand it to the driver in a paper bag.

House: Season 8 2011 Cast & Crew

Intelligent and hard-working, Foreman's ambitions wouldn't go unnoticed, as he'd later claim the title of Dean of Medicine in a later season. Though he struggled to admit it, Foreman oftentimes recognized similarities between him and House — a realization that no person of upstanding morals or a hint of ethical beliefs would ever want to have. Fearing he'd continue to pick up on House's unprincipled ways, Foreman excused himself from the team in Season 3. "I murdered the American accent," Aussie-native Jesse Spencer exclaimed, recalling how Chase was initially intended to be an American doctor. However, after a few discussions with director and executive producer Bryan Singer, Chase eventually evolved from American to British to Australian. Spencer would appear in all eight seasons of House, despite getting fired from House's team in Season 3, and then ultimately taking over House's title as Head of Diagnostics in Season 8.

Robert Sean Leonard (James Wilson)

The series' premise originated with Paul Attanasio, while David Shore, who is credited as creator, was primarily responsible for conceiving the title character. Gregory House, M.D., often construed as a misanthropic medical genius, heads a team of diagnostic fellows at the Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey. Most episodes revolve around the diagnosis of a primary patient and start with a cold open precredits scene set outside the hospital, showing events ending with the onset of the patient's symptoms. The typical episode follows the team in their attempts to diagnose and treat the patient's illness, which often fail until the patient's condition is critical.

Stacy Warner (Sela Ward), House's ex-girlfriend, appears in the final two episodes of Season 1, and seven episodes of Season 2. She wants House to treat her husband, Mark Warner (Currie Graham), whom House diagnoses with acute intermittent porphyria in the Season 1 finale. Stacy and House grow close again, but House eventually tells Stacy to go back to Mark, which devastates her.

Meet the L.A. Cast of HAMILTON

As the show's titular, grumpy doctor, Hugh Laurie led eight seasons of the iconic show and scooped up Golden Globe awards in the process. No longer a world where an idealized doctor has all the answers or a hospital where gurneys race down the hallways, House's focus is on the pharmacological—and the intellectual demands of being a doctor. The trial-and-error of new medicine skillfully expands the show beyond the format of a classic procedural, and at the show's heart, a brilliant but flawed physician is doling out the prescriptions—a fitting symbol for modern medicine.

Olivia Wilde (Remy Hadley, or Thirteen)

They were credited as "Also Starring", with their names appearing after the opening sequence. In Season 7, Jacobson and Wilde received star billing; new regular cast member Tamblyn did not. House's original team of diagnosticians consists of Dr. Eric Foreman (Omar Epps), a neurologist; Dr. Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer), an intensivist; and Dr. Allison Cameron (Jennifer Morrison), an immunologist.

He assembled an audition tape in a hotel bathroom, the only place with enough light, and apologized for its appearance (which Singer compared to a "bin Laden video"). Singer was very impressed by his performance and commented on how well the "American actor" was able to grasp the character. Singer was not aware that Laurie was English, due to his convincing American accent. Laurie credits the accent to "a misspent youth watching too much TV and too many movies". Although locally better-known actors such as Denis Leary, David Cross, Rob Morrow, and Patrick Dempsey were considered for the part, Shore, Jacobs, and Attanasio were as impressed as Singer and cast Laurie as House. Lawrence Kaplow, Peter Blake, and Thomas L. Moran joined the staff as writers at the beginning of the first season after the making of the pilot episode.

Premiering on FOX, "House, M.D." swiftly garnered the adoration of audiences and soon renewed for another season almost as fast as one could say "it's never lupus". In addition to her work on screen, Annable has an eye for interior design and made headlines when she decided to fix up her family's Austin residence. The remodel might actually open doors for her career outside of Hollywood, but regardless of whether she continues working as an actress or makes a late-in-life career move, she's definitely got a lot left in store for her fans. In 2008, Gregory House was voted second sexiest television doctor ever, behind ER's Doug Ross (George Clooney).

Wilson's Heart

The judge reprimands Tritter for pursuing House to excess, and tells House that she thinks he "has better friends than he deserves", referring to Cuddy's 11th-hour testimony on his behalf. House is sentenced to one night in jail for contempt of court and finishes his rehabilitation under the influence of Vicodin. In 2022, Wilde directed her second feature, "Don't Worry Darling," a psychological thriller starring Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, and former One Direction singer Harry Styles. Diagnosed with terminal Huntington's disease, Thirteen appeared in 81 episodes of "House." In 2001, Leonard won a Tony Award for best featured actor in a play for his portrayal of poet A. Since then, Edelstein has had roles in "The Good Doctor," "The Kominsky Method," and most recently, "Little Bird."

Credits

His character was a part of the team of diagnosticians who worked under House until the end of the third season when House fires him. Jacobson has starred in a number of television series and movies, including "Ray Donovan," "Cars 2," and "Transformers." Jennifer Morrison played Dr. Allison Cameron, another of Dr. House's team and Chase's wife, between seasons one and six of "House." After playing the NAACP Image Award-winning role, Epps went on to play major roles in Resurrection, Shooter and recently took on a recurring role in NBC's This Is Us. Robert Sean Leonard played Dr. James Wilson, who was House's only true friend and quite frankly one of our favorite supporting actors thanks to their buddy dynamic. After her role as Dr. Chi Park, Charlyne Yi landed a variety of co-stars in movies like This Is 40, Second Act and Always Be My Maybe and also voices various characters on the animated series Steven Universe.

House describes himself as "a board-certified diagnostician with a double specialty of infectious disease and nephrology". Dr. James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard), House's one true friend, is the head of the Department of Oncology. Dr. Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein), an endocrinologist, is House's boss, as she is the hospital's dean of medicine and chief administrator. House has a complex relationship with Cuddy, and their interactions often involve a high degree of innuendo and sexual tension.

Writers Doris Egan, Sara Hess, Russel Friend, and Garrett Lerner joined the team at the start of Season 2. After observing the show's success, they accepted when Jacobs offered them jobs again the following year. Writers Eli Attie and Sean Whitesell joined the show at the start of Season 4.

Since retiring as House, Laurie took a brief Hollywood hiatus but returned to lend his talents to a variety of critically acclaimed series. He also starred as haunted politician Peter Laurence in the 2020 BBC thriller mini-series, "Roadkill." Hugh Laurie stole the show as Dr. Gregory House, the cynical yet brilliant man everyone loved to hate, and hated to love. House is one of the best anti-heroes in TV history because while he may be obnoxious and unbearable at times, he's also the only person with the brains to save the unsavable patients.

They usually treat only patients whom other doctors have not accurately diagnosed, and House routinely rejects cases that he does not find interesting. The story lines tend to focus on his unconventional medical theories and practices, and on the other characters' reactions to them, rather than on the details of the treatments. Following "House," Spencer stuck with the emergency response beat and joined the cast of NBC's primetime drama series, "Chicago Fire" as firefighter Matt Casey. While a main character in "Chicago Fire," Casey would also make crossover appearances in the related Chicago-verse series, "Chicago P.D." and "Chicago Med," bringing his total Chicago episode count to 213.

Adams first meets House while working as an infirmary doctor in the prison he is being held in. The two quickly hit it off, and once House is released from jail and allowed to return to Princeton-Plainsboro, he recruits Adams to come with him. Peter Jacobson joined the cast of "House" in the fourth season as Dr. Christopher Michael Taub, commonly referred to as "Taub." He played a generally kindhearted, but also anxious and insecure member of the diagnostic team. He is smart, but never smarter than House, and often gets distracted by personal issues such as his frequent infidelity and eventual divorce.

All of them play doctors who work at the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey. Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie), the title character, heads the Department of Diagnostic Medicine. At first, the producers were looking for a "quintessentially American person" to play the role of House. Bryan Singer in particular felt there was no way he was going to hire a non-American actor for the role. At the time of the casting session, Hugh Laurie was in Namibia filming the movie Flight of the Phoenix.

Richard hanged himself in jail, and Joe and Frank Knapp were found guilty and hanged. “Settlement houses were places where social workers would ‘settle’ among immigrant communities, hoping to share knowledge and American culture with the aim of helping their recently-arrived and lower-income neighbors. Settlements often provided services such as daycare, education and healthcare to improve the lives of the poor,” according to the group’s website. The House of the Seven Gables in Salem is hosting a chamber music concert next month to raise funds for its immigrant-focused settlement program. Changes to the landscape — The Retire Beckett house was brought to museum campus in 1924. To accommodate the number of visitors brought about by these new attractions, the organization devised an expanded landscape.

Caroline Emmerton, a philanthropist and preservationist, founded the present-day nonprofit as a museum and Settlement House to assist immigrant families arriving in Salem. Inspired by Jane Addam’s Hull House, she purchased the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion in 1908 and worked with architect Joseph Everett Chandler to restore it to its perceived appearance from the 1600s. Due to the nature of the architecture at The Gables’ campus, our historic house museums are not wheelchair accessible. Our visitor center, restrooms, Colonial Revival gardens, grounds, and a portion of our Museum Store are wheelchair accessible.

John Turner III inherited the house in 1769 and removed one of the gables, bringing it back to seven. In 1782, financial ruin from the Revolutionary War forced him to sell the property to merchant Samuel Ingersoll. Ingersoll removed four more gables and the rear kitchen additions (1794) to impose symmetry on the building, which resulted in a boxy, Federal-style house.

The Counting House is now known as Kids Cove, where young visitors and their families can learn about Salem’s maritime history through engaging hands-on activities. The posts and beams in the great hall are an excellent example of early and unique decorative treatments. Builders spent time creating a cyma, or double-curved profile, and added a scalloped fillet, or banding. The posts and beams are also a source of debate that is still being studied. There are four posts in this room and the carved shoulders do not quite match in height or design. This led to the belief in the early part of the last century that these beams were salvaged pieces from Governor Endicott’s original home.

Whether you're hitting the slopes or leisurely floating down a river, the Bay State has something for every outdoor enthusiast. Also, the musicians themselves left their native homelands to build cultural bridges and lasting artistic legacies through their contributions to the oeuvre of classical music. After the death of her husband, Elizabeth Clarke Manning Hathorne returned to her parents’ home with her three children, a move not uncommon for widows during this period. Celebrate later with a vow renewal and party with family and friends.

Though the home was restored in the Colonial Revival style, it still retains a number of Jacobean details including an exterior overhang girt and specially preserved plaster treatments in the great hall. It was built c.1655 by John Beckett, the first in a long line of famed Salem shipbuilders. The most well-known of these shipbuilders was Retire Beckett, for whom the home is named.

The house of the title is a gloomy New England mansion, haunted since its construction by fraudulent dealings, accusations of witchcraft, and sudden death. The current resident, the dignified but desperately poor Hepzibah Pyncheon, opens a shop in a side room to support her brother Clifford, who has completed a thirty-year sentence for murder. She refuses all assistance from her wealthy but unpleasant cousin, Judge Jaffrey Pyncheon. A distant relative, the lively and pretty young Phoebe arrives and quickly becomes invaluable, charming customers and rousing Clifford from depression. A delicate romance grows between Phoebe and the mysterious attic lodger Holgrave, who is writing a history of the Pyncheon family. Caroline Emmerton, a philanthropist and preservationist, founded the present day museum to assist immigrant families who were settling in Salem.

The departure of Phoebe, the focus of his attention, leaves him bed-ridden. Statue of Nathaniel Hawthorne, created by sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt in 1917. Author Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, MA, and his famous 1851 novel The House of the Seven Gables was based on an actual house in that city that still stands.

He threatens Clifford with an insanity hearing unless he reveals details about the land or the location of the missing deed. Before Clifford can be brought before the Judge (which would destroy Clifford's fragile psyche), the Judge mysteriously dies while sitting in Colonel Pyncheon's chair. The next day, Phoebe returns and finds that Holgrave has discovered the Judge's body. The townsfolk begin to gossip about Hepzibah and Clifford's sudden disappearance. Phoebe is relieved when Hepzibah and Clifford return, having recovered their wits.

In addition, John Turner’s sister Elizabeth was the first wife of Eleazer Gedney, the brother of witchcraft trials judge Bartholomew Gedney. Residents in the surrounding Derby Street neighborhood were the primary beneficiaries of the settlement house. The area was an enclave for Eastern European immigrants, especially from Poland and Russia. Other communities served by Emmerton’s work included the Irish, Italian, Syrian, and African.

There is no reason to quit coming to our club after just few days or weeks or even few months. Most serious club table tennis players understand how complex table tennis is and don’t think of you as any less of an athlete or a person even if you keep losing to most other club players for years to come. Most are more than willing to help you nonetheless, in every way possible to improve your skill level, regardless of whether you are an absolute beginner or even an advanced player. Even if you are not interested in spending lots of money on equipment, you can get a good “basic” setup for less than $100 that can last for years.

We have partnered with the Charlotte Table Tennis Club and their 30 year presence in the community. When we met they were lacking a strong development program for their club members. Together we were able to succeed in meeting both our missions.

However, it’s important to keep certain simple facts in mind before choosing to move up to the sport of table tennis as a serious club player. Table tennis is an extremely racket-sensitive sport and dependent not only on your own playing style but your opponent’s as well. Even many advanced players, let alone newcomers, have absolutely no clue whatsoever about the complexity of modern rackets. Our program for developing a player’s table tennis skill has three levels. Each level consists of four one-hour education sessions, and player progress is evaluated through four multiple choice quizzes, a skills test, and a cumulative multiple choice exam.

Traditionally, this is done by one player rolling the ball off the table into one hand or the other (hidden below the table) and the opponent “chooses” a hand. If the hidden hand with the ball is chosen then that player can choose to serve (what most players do) or choose which end of the table to play from (in which case that player does not get the initial serve). But the server can be chosen by flipping a coin, paper/scissors/rock, or however the two players decide to do it–it doesn’t matter.

Though it is often incorrectly oversimplified down to a few basic styles, grips and rackets, every player needs to find a racket that exactly matches his/her playing style. As you lose over and over to every conceivable style of play you are learning from your beatings. The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem holds 511 original documents from the 1692 Salem witch trials. These documents — such as letters, trial transcriptions and court orders — were entrusted to the museum by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for safekeeping. Some can be viewed and read online here, while a few works of art connected to the trials are on view in the American Art galleries at PEM. Look for the dramatic painting, “Trial of George Jacobs, August 5, 1692” by Tompkins Harrison Matteson, 1855.

Haunted Happenings: October in Salem

Learn about four centuries of inclusive history at one of America’s most beloved historic homes. There are a few other connections to the witchcraft period involving John Turner. When John Proctor’s servant Mary Warren accused Salem Town widow Ann Pudeator of witchcraft, one of Warren’s claims involved Pudeator’s specter causing a young Turner to fall from a cherry tree, knocking him unconscious.

You will also see displays on Hawthorne’s life, work, and historic Salem in general. At the end of the tour, you can choose to explore the small house of Hawthorne’s birth, which was also moved from its original location on Union Street to sit beside the House of the Seven Gables. A few blocks away on Hawthorne Boulevard towers a large statue of Nathaniel Hawthorne himself. The earliest section of the House of the Seven Gables was built in 1668 for Captain John Turner, a wealthy sea captain and merchant who was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1644.

The “Bewitched” statue is at 235 Essex St., at the intersection of Washington and Essex streets in downtown Salem. The Colonial Revival seaside gardens capture the charm of four centuries of gardening in New England. The raised-bed areas of the garden are considered to be the most historically significant feature of the grounds. The patterned beds were laid out in 1909 by Joseph Everett Chandler, the architect who partnered with Caroline Emmerton on the restoration of The House of the Seven Gables. The garden was designed in a Jacobean style as an “oasis of beauty” to be enjoyed by her neighbors. Miss Emmerton was adamant about the maintenance of the grounds and set the standards practiced today.

Emmerton was an incorporator of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities in addition to being a strong proponent of social welfare. She purchased the house in 1908 and transformed it to achieve her preservationist and reformist goals while also emphasizing its connections to Hawthorne’s novel in order to bring in revenue. As she envisioned it, the “restored” house with its postmedieval appearance would teach immigrants about American history and values while also providing housing for settlement workers. Emmerton used ticket and store sale proceeds from the museum to fund The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association. In the late 1800s/early 1900s, the settlement house movement was seen as the progressive method to help newly arriving immigrant families adapt to life in their new cities.

Emmerton grew up in a city that was transitioning from its past as a major shipping port to its future as a manufacturing center for both textiles and the leather industry. George Emmerton, Caroline’s father, worked in the growing chemical industry. The Salem that Caroline grew up in was the Salem of “The Gilded Age,” when advances in machinery led to economic growth, waves of immigration, and tension around class inequality. The Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace is now immediately adjacent to the House of the Seven Gables, and access to it is granted with either a regular admission fee or a grounds pass.

History Alive

But then, what happened in Salem in 1692 may never be accurately understood. The saltbox home that the family leased in 1678 originally sat on 300 acres. The site is now 25 acres and includes a reproduction of the Salem Village Meeting House where early witchcraft hearings occurred.

Since 1909, Chandler's restoration has been carefully maintained. In 1972 the site and buildings became a National Register of Historic Places district; in 1994, The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association built the Seamans Visitor Center. The novel is set in the mid-19th century, but flashbacks to the history of the house, which was built in the late 17th century, are set in other periods.

This belief is based on the knowledge that Hooper purchased part of Endicott’s land and then built his home upon it. In the future, a dendrochronology study will provide science-based evidence that will determine the age of the posts and beam. John Turner II and his family modernized the décor of the home in the Georgian style. Wood paneling was added to the walls of the parlor, great chamber and dining room chamber. Today, these enhancements are considered some of the finest examples of high-style Georgian paneling. Judge Pyncheon arrives at the house hoping to find information about land in Maine, rumored to belong to the family.

After John Turner III lost the family fortune, the house was acquired by the Ingersolls, who remodeled it again. A few years later, a kitchen lean-to and a new north kitchen ell to the rear of the house were added. By 1676, Turner had added a spacious south (front) extension with its own chimney, containing a parlor on the ground floor, with a large bed chamber above it.

Her birth house still stands on Summer Street and her home as an adult can still be seen today on Essex Street. The mark of her generous spirit can be found at the Women’s Friend Society on Hawthorne Boulevard and at Plummer Youth Promise on Winter Island. Caroline Osgood Emmerton was born on April 21, 1866 in Salem, Mass.

Although it is indeed the house in which Hawthorne was born and lived to the age of four, the house was sited a few blocks away on Union Street when he inhabited it. Horace Ingersoll, Susanna's adopted son, told Hawthorne a story of Acadian lovers that later inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1847 poem Evangeline. No matter the season, Massachusetts offers an abundance of outdoor activities to enjoy. Where else can you start your morning with a mountain hike and end the day lounging on a scenic beach?

Inspired by Jane Addam’s Hull House, she purchased what was the old Turner Mansion in 1908 and worked with architect, Joseph Everett Chandler to restore it to its original seven gables. Chandler was a central figure in the early 20th century historic preservation movement and his philosophy influenced the way the house was preserved. In its final iteration, the Turner House is an exemplar of the Colonial Revival movement.
